The Universe Is A Funny Place

Hi, I'm Randy Ingermanson, and I think this is a pretty crazy universe we've found ourselves in! I hope you agree.

I'm a physicist, an author, and probably dangerously disturbed. I recently moved with my family from San Diego to a small town in southern Washington State. If you need to know more about my personal life than that, you are incurably nosy and you can scratch that itch by visiting my personal page with all the usual boring stuff about where I grew up and what kind of ice cream I like.

Recent news: I spent most of March, 2007, following the developing story of the alleged "Jesus family tomb." While the media quickly decided that the matter was over and done with, a quiet controversy raged behind the scenes for several weeks. I was privy to that controversy because of the widespread interest among Biblical scholars in my article Statistics And The "Jesus Family Tomb".

As the story developed, I was pulled right into the heart of it as a player. A number of the experts contacted me, and I spent weeks in intense discussions with several of them.

Finally at the end of March, I completed work on a new article entitled Bayes' Theorem and the "Jesus Family Tomb". That article has pointers to a PDF file that I coauthored with Jay Cost that contains many technical details. It also links to a spreadsheet I developed to do the calculations. You can download the spreadsheet yourself and fiddle with the numbers to estimate your own personal probability estimate that this tomb is the authentic tomb of Jesus of Nazareth.

I write about "The intersection of Science Avenue and Faith Boulevard" because that's the corner where I live. This neighborhood doesn't have many lights, so you see a lot of accidents around here. Be careful of the flying glass! My job in life is to disturb your universe. I hope that's not a problem. An undisturbed universe is a dull universe.

On this site, I'll talk about any old thing that interests me. If it interests me, it may interest you. Let's talk about cool topics! Life is too short to waste time on the boring stuff.

Best regards,
